Northern lights in Bergen: the nights I photographed

Jander Soares ·

Photos from Løvstien and Sotra, taken with an iPhone 16 Pro, and what I learned watching the sky.

Aurora · Bergen

I have been lucky enough to see the northern lights several times in and around Bergen. Most of my photos were taken from Løvstien, but I also photographed them in Sotra.

I used an iPhone 16 Pro. In my experience, colors appear much stronger through the phone camera than to the naked eye. These photos show what the camera captured; looking at the sky in person can feel different.

Most of my pictures were taken between 11 pm and 2 am. But one of the strongest displays I witnessed began around 8 pm in early January 2025. I do not treat that late-night window as a rule.

City lights and clouds make it much harder. Still, with favorable skies, patience and a little luck, it happens. It is one of those experiences of life in Norway that stays with you.
