Is Bergen really Europe’s rainiest city?

Jander Soares ·

Its reputation has a basis. The superlative, however, calls for an umbrella of caution.

Rain is almost a character in Bergen’s story. It changes the colour of the mountains, makes the city’s paving stones shine and explains why a waterproof jacket is often more useful than a rigid itinerary. The damp climate is part of living and travelling here.

You will hear Bergen called “Europe’s rainiest city”, including in tourism materials. The reputation reflects many wet days, but comparing all European cities requires a definition: annual rainfall, number of rainy days, the period studied and the weather station’s location.

Enjoy the nickname without turning it into an absolute scientific record. Pack rainwear, check the day’s forecast and head out anyway: museums, cafés and beautiful streets are still there when the sky decides to join your trip.
